Inland Empire Regional Science Olympiad

Two teams from Temecula Luiseno Elementary School won first and second place in the Inland Empire Regional Science Olympiad competition on Saturday, March 4, in Riverside, CA. The event, which put students through a rigorous set of science-based challenges, featured a total of 18 competing teams. The students began preparing for the competition in November, meeting in class for two hours a week, on weekends, and many hours at home.

The TLES students — who are in the fourth and fifth grades — competed in 18 events involving a range of different sciences. Some students had to study for events where they had to learn everything they could about one subject, such as the human anatomy or weather patterns. In other events, students had to design and build certain items such as pasta racers, rubber powered airplanes, and energy boxes. Still others had to think fast on their feet in events like mystery architecture, density, and grab-a-gram.

The material they studied was very complex, and not typical science at an elementary level. The highly motivated students, in conjunction with the outstanding mentoring and coaching of parents and staff, were able to achieve a high level of success. The teams earned many medals that day, but the passion for science and investigation will live on and flourish.

STAR Testing

TLES begins STAR testing next week, May 1st - 3rd and May 8th - 10th.  Below are some testing tips, so students can do their best on the test!

Arrive on Time to School

Standardized tests are timed and strictly monitored.  It is important students arrive by 8:50 am to enter the classroom calmly, organize test materials and listen to instructions.  Students arriving after 8:55 will be held in the office until after recess.

Develop a Healthy Attitude Towards Tests

It is important to help your child understand why tests are necessary.  Schools use them to measure how much students are learning.  They let teachers know if your child needs extra help, and they also show areas of strength.  It is best to not make too big a deal about test results - especially on a single test. Many things can affect your child's score on any given day.

The Night Before the Test

Try to spend a relaxing evening at home.  It is very important for your child to get a good night's sleep!

Start the Day Off Right

Getting up early on test day helps prevent the morning rush and allows time for a complete, unhurried breakfast.  Avoid topics or arguments that may be upsetting.  By starting the day on a pleasant note, you are more likely to send your child off to school with good feelings.

Bullying Intervention and Prevention Training Workshop

Many children in our nation’s schools are robbed of their opportunity to learn because they are bullied and victimized daily. Despite what many believe, bullying is not a normal part of growing up. Bullying not only has a harmful effect on the victim, it also has a negative impact on the bully and the bystander as well.

Workshop participants will be provided with prevention and intervention strategies for bullying, including resources for creating and maintaining a school wide campaign against bullying.

Partnership with Hugs Foster Family Agency
present.JPG
We are very excited to have teamed up, once again, with Hugs Foster Family Agency.  When you enter the office, you will see a tree to your left with wish tags from foster children in our area.  If you would like to sponsor a child, please choose a tag and follow the directions.  There is the name, gender and age of the children, along with items they would love to receive this year.  You will bring in the item(s) unwrapped, attaching the gift tag to the item.  If the item you are giving is a gift card, you will place that in an envelope with the tag on the outside of the envelope.

If you would like to participate, please select your tag and return the purchased items by December 15th.  The organization will pick the items up, wrap them and distribute them to the children.

Thank you for continuing to help our community by supporting Hugs Foster Family Agency!

California Healthy Kids Survey Results

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) and CSCS form the largest, most comprehensive effort in the nation to assess local students and staff on a regular basis to provide key data on learning barriers, engagement, and
supports. The California Department of Education (CDE) funded the CHKS in 1997 to provide data that would assist schools in: (1) preventing youth health-risk behaviors and other barriers to academic achievement; (2) promoting positive youth development, resilience, and well-being; and (3) fostering positive school climates and engagement in learning. A thorough understanding
of the scope and nature of youth behaviors, attitudes, and learning conditions is essential to guide school improvement efforts and develop effective prevention, health, and youth development programs.

Successful Drop Off and Pick Up

Thank you to all of you that have been patient and following school/traffic rules.  As always, student safety is our primary concern.  Please see the attached document regarding what is required for a successful school drop off and pick up.  In addition, here are a few reminders of our traffic guidelines:

  • Turning left into the parking lot from Wolf Creek Drive is legal.  However, if you are holding up traffic it is illegal and you could be ticketed.  It is also illegal to turn left around those in the turning lane.
  • Turning right into the parking lot, passing the other cars in the right turn lane is illegal.  We have seen many do this, but be aware it has been enforced by traffic officers and you can be ticketed.
  • If you just want to park in the parking lot, you can make a legal left turn from Wolf Creek (not holding up traffic), or stay in the right turn lane from Wolf Valley and make the left upon entering the parking lot.  Another alternative is driving straight into the parking lot from Lyons, if it is safe to do so.
  • You may turn right out of the parking lot from the right lane only.  To get to Wolf Valley: Right on Antelope, Right on Seastar, Left on Seagull and Right on Wallaby.
  • There are legal parking areas on Antelope, Lyons, Sierra and Seastar.  Please do not block neighbors’ driveways, the exit to the parking lot, or the back gates used for deliveries.
  • It is imperative that parents and children cross ONLY where there are crosswalks and crossing guards and/or intersections with a stop sign.  You put your children and drivers at risk when you choose to cut across busy streets such as Antelope and Wolf Creek.  There are crossing guards and crosswalks on the corners of Wolf Creek & Antelope as well as Wolf Creek & Wolf Valley.  In addition, when we have school personnel out telling parents/children to use the crosswalks and their directives are ignored, your child is put in an uncomfortable position of having to defy the authorities that are trying to keep them safe.

We do understand that the traffic surrounding the school can cause some frustration for parents during pick up and drop off.  Please be patient…the extra time in the name of student safety will make a difference for everyone.  Thank you in advance for helping to be part of the solution!

Tim Dignan, Principal
