10 Steps to Getting Started on School Loop

Here are some step by step directions to get started creating your own class website using School Loop. You may want to print these directions and keep them handy near your computer. For more help refer to the videos and/or the "Help" section of School Loop. Good Luck!

  1. Log-in to your account at the bottom of your school's homepage. You need to know your username and password. See your school secretary for help with this if you have forgotten the information.
  2. Next you will begin work on your classroom site. Go to "My Portal" or click on your name once you have logged in.
  3. Now click on "Properties" and decide on the layout you want for your page. You can also rename your page at this time.
  4. You are now ready to start adding elements to your website. Click on any plus sign to bring up the elements gallery window.
  5. For now, stick with the "Page Elements" shown at the top of that window.
  6. To add text (but you can also add videos and images here) click on the "Rich Text Editor" element. A new window will pop up and you will see options much like a normal word processor. Type in what you would like to add to your website in the window. Don't worry you can come back and edit or delete later. Once you're ready click "Save & Exit", then "Publish" your changes.
  7. You can also add pictures/images very easily using the element gallery. Select a new plus sign, click on "Picture" and a window will come up asking you to "Choose File". This just means to locate the picture/photo/image that you want to use that you have already saved on your computer. Once you have located your image, now click on "Save & Exit".
  8. Slideshows are easy to install and your website visitors will love seeing the photos. Select a new plus sign, click on "Slideshow" and a window will pop-up for you to use to create a slideshow. Click on "Upload From Drive" so that you can select the pictures from your computer that you want to use with your slideshow. Once you have started the upload wait for the message "Processing Complete" and choose "Close". Now you can adjust the settings for your show, crop the images, reorder the photos, name your slideshow, and add captions. When you have finished preparing your show, click on "Save & Exit" and "Publish" your slideshow.
  9. At this point you will have created a wonderful classroom website that your guest will enjoy returning to time and again. For more advanced elements you will need to use the "Custom HTML" element, that can wait.
  10. Use some of the resources found on this website page to learn how to customize your website and make it something you enjoy tinkering with. You can have a wonderful site with as little as 15 minutes of effort per week. Pretty soon you will be adding additional pages and features to your every growing website!

Tips for a Better Website

  • Embrace white space, don't overwhelm your user with too much content. Get rid of clutter.
  • Make sure your contact information is readily available.
  • Completely avoid any flashing/spinning elements.
  • Remove out of date items. Christmas is not a year round activity.
  • Use color strategically. Consider going with a single neutral palette. If you have a logo that can be your lead for what colors to use.
  • Limit your fonts, two on a single page is enough. Also, everything cannot be bold!
  • Now, you may disagree with me on this one... not too cutesy! Your website is for kids and adults.
  • Don't go overboard with text. You are not writing a book! People are scanning for information.
  • Clean up your links on a regular basis. Dead links tell your visitor that your website is not worth their time.
  • Proofread! A teacher's website cannot have mistakes.
  • Do your best to have fresh content on a regular basis. If nothing ever changes, why come back?
